GM and LG Energy Solution's Joint Venture Ultium Cells Collaborates with Redwood for Battery Scrap Recycling

Redwood Materials has announced a partnership with Ultium Cells, the battery cell manufacturing joint venture between General Motors (GM) and LG Energy Solution, to recycle scrap from their facilities in Warren, Ohio, and Spring Hill, Tennessee.

Redwood will oversee all scrap from these two plants, processing around 10,000 tons of waste materials annually. Typically, 5-10% of materials used in battery factories end up as scrap. The scrap recycled by Redwood will be processed into battery materials and supplied back to battery cell manufacturers. Redwood's CEO is JB Straubel, a co-founder of Tesla.

Redwood claims that their recycling process reduces energy and water usage while lowering carbon dioxide emissions.

As global automakers ramp up electric vehicle production to meet greenhouse gas reduction regulations, investments in electric vehicle battery projects and the demand for battery material recycling are increasing.

In other news, last December, Sila, a battery materials manufacturer co-founded by a former Tesla engineer, announced it would supply silicon anode materials to Panasonic's US battery plant. Sila CEO Gene Berdichevsky declined to reveal the financial details of this deal, set to begin in 2025.

Additionally, in 2023, Tesla announced a $3.6 billion investment in its Nevada complex to boost the production of a new and larger type of battery cell.
