Driving Innovation in Medical Imaging

Belfast-based Axial3D has raised $18.2 million in a funding round to accelerate the growth of its AI-powered 3D medical imaging platform. The company’s cutting-edge technology transforms CT and MRI scans into detailed, 3D-printable files, enabling applications such as surgical planning, custom implants, prosthetics, and medical training.

The funding includes continued support from early investors like Techstart and Innovation Ulster Limited, alongside new contributions from Whiterock, Innovate UK, and 57 Stars. With a $10 million investment, 57 Stars is now Axial3D’s largest shareholder.

Bernie McGuire, Managing Director at 57 Stars, praised Axial3D’s innovation: “Their pioneering technology is already making waves in the MedTech space. We’re excited to support their growth and see how they advance personalized healthcare.”

Transforming Personalized Healthcare

Since its launch in 2014, Axial3D has been at the forefront of integrating 3D printing into healthcare. Its partnerships with hospitals and organizations like GE HealthCare have pushed the boundaries of patient-specific surgical planning and medical device production.

One standout collaboration was with Newcastle’s Royal Victoria Infirmary, where Axial3D provided 3D-printed anatomical models within 48 hours. This approach saved over two hours of operating room time, reducing costs by £8,000 per surgery.

In Switzerland, the University Hospital of Basel adopted Axial3D’s axial3Dassure platform, improving efficiency in its 3D printing processes and cutting production times.

CEO Roger Johnston emphasized the global impact of Axial3D’s technology: “Our AI platform allows hospitals and medical device companies to standardize precise, patient-specific 3D data, driving better outcomes for patients worldwide.”

Industry Growth and Future Plans

The use of 3D printing in healthcare continues to expand. Facilities like Ricoh USA’s 3D for Healthcare Innovation Studio and 3D Systems’ FDA-cleared Total Ankle device highlight the growing demand for personalized medical solutions. These innovations not only reduce operating times but also lower costs and improve patient care.

With its latest funding, Axial3D is poised to scale its operations and make its technology more widely accessible, further solidifying its position as a leader in personalized healthcare solutions.
