BHP Group reported a 1% increase in its second-quarter iron ore output, driven by a fully ramped-up South Flank project and enhanced productivity across its Western Australia operations. The company highlighted a record volume of iron ore delivered from the Central Pilbara hub, which includes South Flank and Mining Area C.
South Flank and Operational Efficiency
The completion of the South Flank project in the previous financial year enabled BHP to optimize operations, achieving a 9% productivity boost. Supply chain improvements further supported higher output levels, demonstrating the project's strategic importance in enhancing BHP's iron ore capabilities.
Record Production and Future Outlook
For the three months ending December 31, BHP reported iron ore output of 73.1 million tonnes (Mt) from its Western Australia operations on a 100% basis, surpassing Visible Alpha's consensus estimate of 72.8 Mt. This marks a slight increase from the 72.7 Mt produced in the same period last year.
BHP has maintained its annual iron ore production forecast for Western Australia operations at 282-294 Mt but expects output to reach the higher end of this range.
As the world’s largest listed miner, BHP’s consistent operational performance underscores its ability to meet growing global demand for the steel-making commodity while leveraging large-scale projects like South Flank to strengthen its competitive edge.
