Mexican Auto Exports Slow in January Amid US Trade Uncertainty

Inegi

Mexico's light vehicle exports fell by 14% year-on-year in January, with automakers shipping 219,414 units, 84% of which were destined for the U.S., according to Inegi. Exports also declined 17% from December, reflecting concerns over U.S. trade policy.

Despite the export slowdown, production rose 2% to 312,257 units compared to January 2024, while domestic sales grew 6% to 119,811 vehicles. However, domestic sales fell 18% from December, signaling a mixed start to 2025 after a record-breaking 3.99 million vehicles produced in 2024.

EV & Hybrid Growth Despite Monthly Dip

  • Domestic EV and hybrid sales rose 36% year-over-year to 10,881 units but dropped 30% from December—the first monthly decline since August.
  • Production of four of Mexico's five EV and hybrid models surged 86% from December, reaching 16,034 units in January.

Outlook & Trade Policy Risks

AMDA forecasts 1.53 million auto sales in 2025, a 2.2% increase, but warns a proposed 25% U.S. tariff on Mexican vehicles could cut sales to 1.48 million. Slowing investment in Mexico's auto sector and weaker producer confidence also raise concerns about future growth.
