Metinvest Produces Over 30 Mine Trawls for Ukrainian Armed Forces

Metinvest specialists have manufactured more than 30 mine trawls for the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with production capacity reaching up to five units per month. Despite each trawl costing approximately UAH 2.5 million, the company supplies them to the frontlines free of charge. According to Metinvest’s Chief Operating Officer, Alexander Mironenko, this level of production currently meets the needs of the Ukrainian military, though the company is prepared to increase output if the government places additional orders.

Metinvest began producing these mine-clearing trawls in the summer of 2023 in response to a request from the military. The trawls are mounted on tanks and combat vehicles to neutralize anti-tank and anti-personnel mines. The design consists of heavy metal wheels attached to a steel base, which press into the ground while the vehicle moves forward. If a mine is present, the trawl’s weight triggers detonation, preventing damage to the main vehicle and protecting the crew.

The company’s trawls are based on the Soviet-era KMT-7 roller mine countermeasure system but have been significantly improved in collaboration with the military. Key modifications include a simplified attachment system for combat vehicles, an optional mechanical discharge system, and universal adapters for vehicles lacking standard mounts. These upgrades enhance efficiency and ease of use in battlefield conditions.

Metinvest’s mine trawls have passed all Ministry of Defense tests, and all manufactured units are immediately deployed to the frontlines. The National Guard and Land Forces brigades were among the first recipients in 2023. To ensure continued functionality, the company also produces spare parts kits, including replacement wheels—three per trawl—to enable rapid repairs in the field.

Beyond mine trawls, Metinvest is actively supporting Ukraine’s defense through its Steel Front initiative. The company has developed armored protection for the MIM-104 Patriot missile system control module, playing a crucial role in defending Ukraine’s airspace.
