Malfunction at International Paper Mill Led to Acute Odor in City’s Water

International Paper
A recent malfunction at a shuttered International Paper mill in Georgetown resulted in a strong odor in the city’s water supply. According to Mayor Carol Jayroe, the issue was caused by a process fault linked to recent cold weather, which affected the mill's condensate-pulling piping system.

Cause and Resolution

An official statement from International Paper explained that freezing temperatures led to complications in the piping system. During depressurization, a small amount of condensate leaked, releasing a sulfurous odor. However, the company emphasized that the concentration remained well below levels considered harmful to human health.

The corporation confirmed that the issue has been resolved, with the piping system fully repaired. Additionally, International Paper is continuing its planned closure and cleaning procedures at the mill.

Commitment to Safety

The company reaffirmed that its top priority is ensuring the safety of its employees, the community, and the environment. Mayor Carol Jayroe assured residents that she will maintain communication with International Paper and relevant agencies to monitor the situation closely.

Both city officials and International Paper have stated that there are currently no known risks to public safety.
