Ukrainian steel companies significantly increased their exports of flat steel products in January 2025, reaching 155.5 thousand tons. This marks a 15.7% rise year-over-year (y/y) and a substantial 28.8% increase month-over-month (m/m), according to data from the State Customs Service analyzed by GMK Center.
Surge in Flat Product Shipments
The export volume in January was the highest since September 2024, when 178.82 thousand tons were shipped. Hot-rolled flat products (HS 7208) dominated shipments, totaling 129.82 thousand tons—up 17.5% y/y and 31% m/m. The key markets for these exports were Poland and Bulgaria, importing 43.44 thousand tons and 32.14 thousand tons, respectively.
Cold-rolled flat products (HS 7209) exports also saw growth, reaching 19.8 thousand tons—an increase of 6.9% y/y and 22.5% m/m. Poland and Italy were the primary buyers, with imports of 4.94 thousand tons and 4.86 thousand tons, respectively.
Coated flat products accounted for 5.8 thousand tons of exports, up 12% y/y and 6.8% m/m. The leading destinations included Poland, which imported 3.83 thousand tons, and Romania, which received 1.82 thousand tons.
Revenue Growth
January’s total revenue from flat product exports stood at $81.09 million, marking a 6.1% y/y and 17.2% m/m increase.
Strong 2024 Performance
As previously reported by GMK Center, Ukraine’s flat product exports in 2024 surged by 36.1% y/y, reaching 1.63 million tons. Hot-rolled flat products comprised over 80% of these shipments at 1.363 million tons (+44.7% y/y), while cold-rolled products accounted for 12%, totaling 201.71 thousand tons (+0.7% y/y).
