Weekly Production Drops 2.50% Year-Over-Year

The American Iron and Steel Institute (AISI) reported a 2.50% decline in U.S. raw steel production for the week ending March 22, 2025, compared to the same week last year. The total production for the week stood at 1.654 million net tons (NT), with a capacity utilization rate of 74.3%. In contrast, the corresponding week in 2024 saw a higher output of 1.696 million NT at a 76.4% capacity utilization rate.

Regional Production Overview

  • Southern Region: 745,000 NT (highest production output)
  • Great Lakes Region: 488,000 NT
  • North East Region: 123,000 NT
  • Midwest Region: 224,000 NT
  • Western Region: 74,000 NT
Despite the overall decline, the Great Lakes region demonstrated a notable surge in production, helping to offset some of the national downturn.

Week-on-Week and Year-to-Date Performance

Compared to the previous week ending March 15, 2025, when production was 1.667 million NT at a 74.9% utilization rate, this week’s figures reflect a 0.8% drop in output. The adjusted year-to-date output as of March 22, 2025, stood at 19.171 million NT, with an average capacity utilization rate of 74.4%. This marks a 1.4% decrease compared to 19.447 million NT produced during the same period in 2024, when the utilization rate was 75.8%.

The data underscores ongoing fluctuations in steel production, with some regions showing resilience while overall capacity utilization remains slightly lower than in the previous year.
