Innovative Collaboration for Sustainable Steel Production
Italian engineering giant Danieli Group and French nuclear technology innovator newcleo have signed a memorandum of understanding to explore the integration of advanced small nuclear reactors (Lead-cooled Fast Reactors, LFR) into steel production. According to newcleo, these reactors can provide both electricity and high-temperature heat, enabling green steel production through Danieli’s Digimelter technology and supporting green hydrogen production for Energiron’s direct reduction plants.
Advancing Decarbonization in the Steel Industry
Stefano Buono, founder and CEO of newcleo, emphasized that the collaboration aims to provide steelmakers with economically viable solutions for green steel production. Alessandro Brussi, Chairman of the Board at Danieli, highlighted the importance of fossil-free energy in advancing the decarbonization of steelmaking.
Danieli has already committed €572 million over the next five years to sustainability projects focused on increasing plant efficiency and maximizing waste recycling. One of its most significant initiatives is the Digital Green Plant, an eco-friendly production line capable of manufacturing 700,000 tons of specialty steel per year, aligning with sustainable development principles.
