Innovative Solutions Powering Public and Private Sector Recycling
Machinex, a leading recycling equipment manufacturer based in Plessisville, Quebec, has successfully launched three new material recovery facilities (MRFs) to enhance recycling efficiency. These installations, developed in partnership with municipal and private sector leaders, integrate cutting-edge sorting technology to maximize material recovery and support sustainability goals.
Phoenix MRF: Pioneering Advanced Recycling Technology
Machinex collaborated with the city of Phoenix to help achieve its ambitious zero-waste target by 2050. The newly implemented 30 tons-per-hour residential single-stream system, operated by Austin-based Balcones Recycling, is designed to improve curbside collection efficiency.
The system incorporates Machinex’s Mach Trommel front-end solution, two Mach Ballistic Separators, 11 Mach Hyspec optical sorters, and the AI-powered SamurAI sorting robot. This advanced configuration enhances safety, reduces contamination, and significantly boosts recovery rates for paper, cardboard, high-density polyethylene (HDPE), polyethylene terephthalate (PET), polypropylene (PP), mixed plastics, and glass.
Phoenix Public Works Deputy Director Eduardo Rodriguez highlighted the impact of these upgrades, stating, "Because the machines are so modernized, we’ll be able to capture more material with less contamination. This technology is crucial to reaching our zero-waste goal."
Republic Services: Enhancing Commercial and Residential Recycling
In King of Prussia, Pennsylvania, Machinex upgraded Republic Services’ MRF, increasing its capacity to 25 tons per hour for single-stream and commercial materials. The new system, launched last fall, includes Mach Hyspec optical sorters and Mach Motion Floors, improving sorting precision and clean paper recovery.
The enhancements align with Republic Services’ commitment to sustainability by optimizing material processing and increasing overall throughput.
Interstate Waste Services: High-Capacity MRF for North Arlington
Interstate Waste Services (IWS) partnered with Machinex to develop a state-of-the-art MRF in North Arlington, New Jersey. Designed for both residential and commercial single-stream recycling, the facility processes 40 tons per hour for residential materials and 20 tons per hour for commercial recyclables.
The system features seven Mach Hyspec optical sorters, the AI-driven SamurAI sorting robot, a Mach Ballistic Separator, compactors, and a specialized film capture system. Addressing space constraints, Machinex engineered a vertical multi-level system to optimize efficiency while maintaining smooth processing operations.
“Our engineering team took full advantage of the building’s height to design an efficient layout despite the limited floor space,” said Rusty Angel, Machinex Eastern Region Sales Manager.
A Commitment to Recycling Innovation
With these three installations, Machinex continues to drive innovation in the recycling industry, equipping MRFs with cutting-edge technology that enhances material recovery, reduces contamination, and promotes long-term sustainability.
