Ternium Mexico Triggers Anti-Dumping Probe to Protect Domestic Industry
The Mexican Ministry of Economy has officially initiated an anti-dumping investigation into imports of hot-rolled steel from China and Vietnam, according to MRS Steel. The proceedings were launched at the request of Ternium Mexico, a leading local steel producer, which claimed that imported hot-rolled coil (HRC) was being sold below fair market value, causing material harm to the domestic industry.
The investigation aims to safeguard local steelmakers from the risk of unfair competition posed by low-priced imports. Among the exporters under scrutiny are major Chinese companies, including Ansteel Group and Baosteel, as well as Vietnamese steel producers such as Formosa Ha Tinh and Hoa Phat Group. Both Vietnamese companies have been expanding their exports to Mexico, with Vietnam shipping over 260,000 tons of hot-rolled steel to the country last year.
The investigation will cover the period from September 2023 to August 2024, focusing on products classified under tariff codes including 7208.10.03, 7208.25.02, 7208.26.01, and others.
Separately, the Ministry of Industry and Trade of Vietnam recently announced temporary anti-dumping duties on imports of hot-rolled coils from China, with rates ranging from 19.38% to 27.83%. The tariffs will take effect on March 7 and remain valid for 120 days.
