TechnipFMC and MODEC Secure Major Deals for Offshore Brazil Development

Shell has awarded two significant contracts to TechnipFMC and MODEC for its Gato do Mato gas-condensate project in Brazil’s Santos Basin. The contracts follow Shell Brasil Petróleo’s final investment decision (FID) on the deep-water development.

TechnipFMC Secures $1 Billion iEPCI Contract

TechnipFMC has been granted an integrated engineering, procurement, construction, and installation (iEPCI) contract valued at over $1 billion. This agreement, to be recorded in early 2025, will deploy TechnipFMC’s Subsea 2.0 configure-to-order production systems to enhance project management and accelerate oil output.

TechnipFMC subsea president Jonathan Landes stated: “Throughout our 30-year partnership with Shell, we have built an overwhelmingly strong record of delivery. Our success in integrating and industrializing innovative solutions gives us the utmost confidence in providing the schedule certainty Shell requires for this flagship project offshore Brazil.”

MODEC to Deliver FPSO Gato do Mato

MODEC has finalized a purchase and sales agreement with Shell for a floating production storage and offloading (FPSO) system. This deal includes a 20-year commitment for operations and maintenance following the completion of front-end engineering design (FEED).

The FPSO Gato do Mato is designed to produce up to 120,000 barrels of oil per day, along with associated gas and water. It will operate at a depth of approximately 2,000m and is located 200km south of Rio de Janeiro. The unit will feature a Next Generation Hull engineered for 25 years of operation. MODEC’s FPSO marks the 19th unit developed for Brazil and the second directly delivered to Shell for the country’s offshore sector. The company will design both the hull and topsides facilities, while a SOFEC Spread Mooring system will manage mooring operations. Stabilized crude oil will be stored on the FPSO before being transferred to shuttle tankers for distribution.

Shell and Partners Set Production Target for 2029

Shell’s FID allows the project to move forward, with production expected to begin in 2029. The Gato do Mato consortium consists of Shell (50%), Ecopetrol (30%), and TotalEnergies (20%).
