Innovative Resin Application Strengthens Ore Block Stability
The use of injectable resins in mining has significantly improved underground stabilization techniques, particularly in challenging geological environments. Weber Mining recently conducted a case study demonstrating how resin injection was used to reinforce an ore pillar situated near collapsed zones, ensuring a safer and more efficient long-hole drilling process.
Challenges in Ore Extraction and the Need for Reinforcement
Initially, mining teams considered extracting the ore block without fortification, but safety risks made this option impractical. The presence of a significant collapse zone raised concerns about losing the entire block and expanding the collapse into the extraction area. To prevent structural failures, Weber Mining proposed stabilizing a pillar between the ore block and the collapsed area using specialized resin injection.
Since there was no upper gallery access, engineers designed an upward drilling pattern from the lower gallery. This approach allowed for sectorized resin injection along the block’s perimeter. Eight injection lines, spaced three meters apart, were drilled with boreholes of varying depths, ranging from six to thirteen meters.
Optimized Resin Selection and Injection Process
Ground conditions varied, with different rock types and fractured zones, requiring a tailored injection strategy. Engineers monitored resin consumption, noting up to a 30% variability due to fracture differences. A non-expanding resin with a compressive strength of 35 MPa and a four-minute setting time was chosen for its high adhesion and rapid solidification.
The injection process followed a strategic sequence, starting from the lowest boreholes to achieve uniform saturation. This controlled approach ensured homogeneous reinforcement and minimized material waste. The entire stabilization operation was completed within just three days.
Impact on Mining Efficiency and Safety
Weber Mining’s innovative method proved crucial for maintaining pillar integrity during long-hole drilling operations, where high stress levels pose significant risks. The flexibility of the resin allowed for effective cohesion, preventing pillar collapse and optimizing drilling efficiency.
This success highlights the importance of precision in ground reinforcement and showcases Weber Mining’s expertise in applying advanced chemical solutions for underground stability. With offices in France, Poland, Turkey, Australia, and Mexico, Weber Mining continues to provide global support for the mining sector.
