ScrapMonster Index Reports Drops in Copper and Aluminum; Stability in Other Segments

Chinese scrap metal prices showed a modest downward trend on April 22, 2025, according to the ScrapMonster Price Index. While copper and aluminum scrap categories experienced price drops, stainless steel, steel, and brass/bronze scrap held firm.

Prices for major copper scrap categories declined:
  • #1 Copper Bare Bright: Down by CNY 100/MT
  • #1 and #2 Copper Wire and Tubing: Each down CNY 100/MT
  • #1 Insulated Copper Wire (85% Recovery): Dropped CNY 50/MT
Other copper scrap categories such as #2 Insulated Copper Wire (50% Recovery), Copper Transformer scrap, Cu Yokes, Harness Wire (35% Recovery), Cu/Al Radiators, Heater Cores, Scrap Electric Motors, and Sealed Units remained unchanged.

Several aluminum scrap grades saw price cuts:
  • 6063 Extrusions and Aluminum Ingots: Down CNY 100/MT
  • E.C. Aluminum Wire, Old Cast, and Old Sheet: Also fell CNY 100/MT
  • Aluminum Radiators, Aluminum Transformers, UBC, and Zorba 90% INF: Each dropped CNY 50/MT

Stainless Steel, Steel, and Brass/Bronze Scrap Prices Hold Firm

Despite the volatility in copper and aluminum prices:
  • Stainless steel scrap prices, including 201 SS, 304 SS Solid and Turning, 309 SS, 310 SS, 316 SS, and Shred SS, remained unchanged.
  • Steel scrap, including #1 HMS and Cast Iron Scrap, held steady.
  • Brass and bronze scrap categories such as Brass Radiators, Red Brass, and Yellow Brass reported no variation in pricing.

Market Outlook: Mixed Signals as Metals Diverge

While price pressure continues in copper and aluminum segments due to market fluctuations and demand concerns, stability in stainless steel and other scrap categories may provide short-term support to recyclers and scrap processors.
