Bosch Expands Quantum Sensor Development with Element Six
Bosch has taken a major step toward the commercialization of quantum sensors by establishing a joint venture with Element Six, a leading provider of synthetic diamond solutions. The new company, Bosch Quantum Sensing, is based on Bosch’s in-house startup of the same name, launched in 2022. Headquartered in Ludwigsburg, Germany, the company currently employs 30 associates, with Bosch leading operations and Element Six holding a 25% stake. The establishment is pending official approval.
Synthetic Diamonds: A Key to Quantum Sensor Advancements
Quantum sensors, utilizing synthetic diamonds, have the potential to revolutionize industries such as healthcare, navigation, and resource exploration. These sensors can detect minute magnetic fields with unprecedented precision, meeting the highest market requirements. Bosch aims to develop these sensors at an industrial scale, setting new standards in efficiency and accuracy.
Bosch estimates that, by the mid-2030s, the market potential for quantum sensor applications in medical and mobility sectors will reach billions of euros annually. The company’s latest prototype is as compact as a smartphone, enhancing its portability, affordability, and scalability. Future advancements aim to integrate quantum sensors onto a single chip.
Strategic Partnership to Drive Innovation
Stefan Hartung, Chairman of Robert Bosch GmbH, emphasized the importance of quantum sensor technology: "Quantum sensors are a future technology with huge potential. They will bring fundamental changes to many industries and improve people's lives." Katrin Kobe, CEO of Bosch Quantum Sensing, reiterated the company’s commitment to making quantum sensors economically viable and mass-producible.
Element Six CEO Siobhán Duffy highlighted the partnership’s alignment with De Beers Group’s Origins strategy, stating, "We will integrate our synthetic diamond technology with Bosch Quantum Sensing’s capabilities to unlock new possibilities in healthcare, navigation, and beyond."
With Bosch’s expertise in sensor systems and Element Six’s advanced synthetic diamond technology, the joint venture is poised to push the boundaries of quantum sensor applications, ushering in a new era of precision-driven technology.
