April 28 Index reveals rising copper values while stainless steel and aluminum slide

Scrap metal prices in China presented a mixed performance on April 28, 2025, according to the ScrapMonster Price Index. Gains in copper scrap prices were offset by declines in aluminum and stainless steel scrap, while steel and brass scrap remained mostly stable.

Copper Scrap Prices Edge Higher

Copper scrap prices led the upward trend:
  • #1 Copper Bare Bright, #1 Copper Wire and Tubing, and #2 Copper Wire and Tubing all rose CNY 100 per metric ton (MT).
  • #1 Insulated Copper Wire (85% Recovery) increased by CNY 50 per MT.
  • Other categories like #2 Insulated Copper Wire (50% Recovery), Copper Transformer, Cu Yokes, Harness Wire, Heater Cores, and Scrap Electric Motors remained unchanged.

Aluminum Scrap Prices Decline

Aluminum scrap saw a widespread decline:
  • 6063 Extrusions, E.C. Aluminum Wire, Old Cast, Old Sheet, and Aluminum Ingots dropped CNY 100 per MT.
  • Aluminum Radiators, Transformers, UBC, and Zorba 90% INF slipped CNY 50 per MT.

Stainless Steel Scrap Down Across Grades

Stainless steel scrap saw broad-based weakness:
  • 201 SS fell CNY 50 per MT.
  • 304 SS Solid and Turning declined CNY 100 per MT.
  • 309 SS and 316 SS Solid lost CNY 150 per MT.
  • 310 SS scrap recorded the largest drop, falling CNY 200 per MT.
  • Shred SS declined by CNY 100 per MT.

Steel and Brass/Bronze Scrap Prices Hold Steady

Prices for #1 HMS, Cast Iron Scrap, and all brass/bronze grades including Brass Radiators, Red Brass, and Yellow Brass were unchanged.

Despite some positive momentum in copper, the overall market reflects weakened demand and cautious sentiment, especially in the aluminum and stainless segments.
