Scaling Capacity to Meet Growing Demand
Dallas-based battery recycler Ecobat has successfully commissioned three lithium-ion battery (LIB) recycling plants within a year, marking a major milestone in sustainable battery processing. The new facilities, located in Hettstedt, Germany; Casa Grande, Arizona; and Darlaston, England, collectively process up to 10,000 tons of LIBs annually, with plans to scale capacity to 25,000 tons.
Ecobat focuses on producing black mass material from recycled LIBs, which contain valuable elements such as lithium, cobalt, nickel, manganese, and graphite. Black mass is a crucial component in closed-loop battery production, reducing reliance on newly mined materials and fostering more sustainable supply chains.
Strategic Facility Expansion Across Key Markets
Hettstedt, Germany: Commissioned in Q4 2023, this facility processes diverse battery chemistries, including electric vehicle (EV) packs, portable electronics, e-bikes, and power tools. It supports major automotive original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and collection programs across Europe.
Casa Grande, Arizona: Operational since April 2024, this facility collaborates directly with automotive OEMs, battery manufacturers, and e-scrap recyclers to process LIBs and recover black mass for North American and global markets.
Darlaston, England: Launched in November 2024, this site serves as a critical hub for the UK and European battery recycling industry. It processes multiple LIB types while offering diagnostic services and supporting sustainable material flows in the British supply chain.
Commitment to Circular Economy and Sustainability
Ecobat Solutions Managing Director Brett Horton highlighted the company’s commitment to sustainable, closed-loop battery recycling. “With EV sales rising and more end-of-life batteries entering the market, our new facilities are well-positioned to meet these challenges, creating value for our partners and stakeholders while helping to drive the transition to a circular economy.”
Stefanie Scruggs, Ecobat’s Chief Sustainability and Health, Safety, and Environment Officer, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to reducing the environmental impact of battery production and disposal. “We remain dedicated to driving innovation in battery recycling and advancing our mission to create a cleaner, more sustainable future.”
Ecobat continues to expand its global footprint, aiming to lead the way in LIB recycling while supporting the growing need for sustainable energy solutions.
