Carbon capture and green hydrogen projects drive decarbonization strategy through 2030

Emsteel, a leading steel and building materials producer in the Gulf region, has increased innovation and investment spending by 127% from 2020 to 2024, according to CEO Saeed Ghumran Al Remeithi in a Gulf Business interview. The company views innovation as a key competitive edge to overcome market volatility, regulatory shifts, and supply chain disruptions.

Green Hydrogen Pilot Marks MENA’s First Green Steel Initiative

A centerpiece of Emsteel’s innovation drive is its partnership with Masdar to deploy green hydrogen for direct iron reduction. This pilot project, the first of its kind in the MENA region, is now fully operational. With a 2.1 MW capacity, it can generate 368 tonnes of green hydrogen annually—enough to produce 5,000 tonnes of green steel per year.

Environmental Tech Pushes Emsteel Toward Zero-Carbon Future
The company is also implementing:
  • Carbon capture technology
  • Closed water recycling systems
  • Waste heat recovery initiatives
  • Alternative raw materials
These efforts support Emsteel’s low-carbon iron supply chain initiative, currently undergoing a full feasibility study.

Decarbonization Strategy Targets 40% Emissions Cut by 2030

In February 2025, Emsteel launched its ambitious decarbonization roadmap, targeting a 40% reduction in steel-related emissions and 30% in cement operations by 2030, compared to 2019 levels. The company’s ultimate goal is net-zero emissions by 2050.

Holding 60% of the UAE’s steel market and exporting to over 70 countries, Emsteel is positioned to influence the regional industry’s transition to low-emission, green steel solutions.
