Rare Yellow Diamond Discovered in Canada’s Arctic Region
Rio Tinto has uncovered one of the largest gem-quality diamonds ever found at its Diavik diamond mine in Canada. The 158.20-carat rough diamond, discovered at the remote site 200km south of the Arctic Circle in the Northwest Territories, is an exceptionally rare find.
The Diavik mine, which primarily produces high-quality white diamonds, has yielded only five yellow diamonds over 100 carats in its 22-year history. Less than one percent of Diavik’s total production consists of rare yellow diamonds, making this discovery even more remarkable.
“This two-billion-year-old, natural Canadian diamond is a miracle of nature and a testament to the skill and fortitude of all the men and women who work in Diavik’s challenging sub-arctic environment,” said Matt Breen, Diavik Diamond Mines' chief operating officer.
Sustainable Operations at Diavik Mine
Operating since 2003, Diavik is known for its responsible sourcing and sustainability efforts. The mine functions off-grid and incorporates renewable energy to reduce its environmental footprint. Since 2012, Diavik has run a hybrid wind-diesel power facility, and in 2024, the company completed the construction of a solar power plant.
Patrick Coppens, Rio Tinto’s general manager of sales and marketing for diamonds, highlighted the significance of the discovery. “The beauty and purity of Diavik diamonds continue to excite passions amongst all who see them, and we look forward to following the onward journey of this very special diamond,” he said.
Rio Tinto Partners with University of Queensland to Address Labor Shortages
In other recent news, Rio Tinto has partnered with the University of Queensland (UQ) to launch the South Gobi Underground Mass Mining Institute in Mongolia. This initiative aims to address the global shortage of mining professionals, as fewer students pursue mining engineering degrees.
The new institute will offer a comprehensive training program for local and international mining professionals. Rio Tinto’s Oyu Tolgoi copper mine will serve as the primary practical training hub for the inaugural 2025 cohort.
