Chinese Manufacturer Expands Nickel Output to Meet Growing Demand

Weiming, a leading Chinese environmental protection equipment manufacturer, has commenced nickel cathode production at its subsidiary, Weiming Shengqing, in Wenzhou, Zhejiang province. This move marks a significant milestone as the company expands its nickel production capacity to support increasing global demand.

The first phase of the project features a 25,000-tonne-per-year (t/yr) production capacity for nickel cathodes. Weiming is on track to complete the second phase—adding another 25,000 t/yr—by mid-2025. Once fully operational, the plant will strengthen China’s nickel supply for battery production and industrial applications.

Securing Raw Materials for Nickel Production

Weiming sources nickel matte and mixed-hydroxide-precipitate (MHP) as key feedstocks for its nickel cathode production. In August 2024, the company received its first shipment of nickel matte from Indonesia, totaling 1,429 tons. This milestone enhances Weiming’s ability to secure stable and sustainable raw material supplies.

Additionally, Weiming operates the Jiaman high nickel matte project in Indonesia in partnership with Merit International Capital. Located in Weda Bay, North Maluku, the project has a nameplate capacity of 40,000 t/yr of nickel metal equivalent. Its four production lines, each capable of producing 10,000 t/yr, further support Weiming’s supply chain.

Weiming’s Strategic Role in the Global Nickel Market

With rising demand for nickel in electric vehicle (EV) batteries and industrial applications, Weiming’s expansion into nickel cathode production positions it as a key player in the global metals industry. The company’s investments in Indonesia and China ensure a consistent supply of nickel to meet both domestic and international needs.

As the second phase of its Zhejiang plant nears completion, Weiming is set to play a crucial role in securing high-quality nickel feedstocks, contributing to the global green energy transition.
